Park Road Widening:
I-4 to Sam Allen Road
Hillsborough County, Florida
The engineering team at American developed a creative solution for this project that helped reduce construction costs by reducing pavement design and maintaining existing roadway geometry. This roadway widening and reconstruction project included .754, miles of improvements to Park Road south of Sam Allen Road and 0.57 miles of improvements to Sam Allen Road west and east of Park Road. Modifications extend from right-of-way to right-of-way. Work elements include: providing four-through lanes with a 40-foot depressed median along Park Road, construction of a westbound left-turn lane on Sam Allen Road and an eastbound right-turn lane on Sam Allen Road, and five-foot sidewalks along both sides of Park Road. A stormwater pond was constructed to the east of Park Road at the current fill site owned by FDOT, which will be deeded to Hillsborough County for maintenance. A portion of the existing property owned by the Department was used to provide wetland mitigation recovery for an adjacent project on SR 39. American produced the following plans for this project: signing and pavement markings, signalization, drainage and traffic control.
Stormwater modeling included the extensions of two box culverts. A watershed model using ICPR was developed and approved by Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD). An Environmental Resource Permit has been received for these improvements.
