American is providing environmental consulting services to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) for their Runway 6-24 Safety Area Improvements Project at the Niagara Falls International Airport. The project involves relocating a section of Cayuga Creek to accommodate an approximately 1,000 foot extension of the runway safety area (RSA) in accordance with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) safety standards. American conducted this work as part of a task order term contract for environmental services which has recently been renewed by the NFTA.
The project involves relocating the existing channel. The new stream channel will be about 1,950 feet in length and is designed to accommodate flood waters. The 60 foot wide channel will include a low flow channel as well as a series of meanders and improved fish habitat. In addition, an off-site mitigation plan is being prepared for the replacement of lost stream corridor habitat.
American is preparing a Joint Application for Permit for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The permit will be used for construction of the new stream channel at the 6-24 RSA as well as the new off-site mitigation channel and associated habitat restoration.
