FDOT District 1:
Hurricane Charley Emergency Repairs
Lee and Charlotte Counties, Florida
Immediately after Hurricane Charley made land fall in August 2004, American began coordinating and inspecting emergency signal repairs. A team from American restored the traffic signal system in the cities of Port Charlotte, Punta Gorda, North Port, and nearby Charlotte and Lee Counties. The project required assisting the FDOT in documenting and inspecting traffic signals across District 1. American was responsible for: emergency design services related to the replacement of over 120 signalized intersections, structural evaluations of all existing signal poles and foundations in Charlotte County and the City of North Port, scheduling daily activities and construction engineering inspection of the signal repairs. The first phase of this project focused on getting each affected intersection safe for the traveling public and was completed within days of Hurricane Charley’s landfall. The implementation of Phase II ensured each intersection had operational signals. Phase III restored each intersection to plan specifications.
