Hounsfield Wind Farm

Town of Hounsfield, New York

American was selected by Upstate NY Power Corp to manage the development of the Hounsfield Wind Farm, a utility scale wind farm project in the Town of Hounsfield, New York. The Project is located on Galloo Island in eastern Lake Ontario, 6 miles off shore.

The project consists of up to 84-3.0 megawatt (MW) wind turbine generators, capable of generating up to 252 MW of power. Related wind farm facilities include: the electrical collection system, on-island substation, service roads, dock and off-loading facilities and a residential and operations & maintenance complex. Total construction costs are estimated to be over $200 million.

American is working as the Program Manager for the project, and in that capacity we are responsible for the coordination of all environmental studies, design and permitting for the project. This complex project involves several local agencies, six state agencies and three federal agencies. American’s tasks include; coordination of specialized studies evaluating impacts to avian and bat species, visual impact, wetland impacts and mitigation, noise, socioeconomics, consistency with coastal zone policies and effect on cultural resources (historic architecture and archaeology), as well as completion of the Draft and Final Environmental Impact Statements.

Design related services include Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping and analysis; guidance on facility layout; and transportation analysis for project component delivery and construction logistics. American designed, produced and published a website for the wind farm.

American has worked or is working directly with approving agencies including NYS Department of Environmental Conser-vation, NYS Office of Parks Recreation and Historic Preservation, NYS Department of State, NYS Public Service Commission, US Fish and Wildlife Service, US Army Corps of Engineers and US Coast Guard.
